Percentage change tells you the size of a move relative to where it started. The multiple is often easier to reason about for large moves: a 900% gain and a 10× are the same thing. The recovery figure matters most after a loss, because the deeper the drawdown, the larger the rebound required.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate percentage gain or loss?

Subtract the starting value from the ending value, divide by the starting value, then multiply by 100. A move from 20 to 25 is (25 − 20) ÷ 20 × 100 = 25%.

Why does a 50% loss need a 100% gain to recover?

Percentages are measured against a moving base. Falling 50% from 100 leaves 50; getting back to 100 from 50 requires doubling, which is a 100% gain. Larger drawdowns need disproportionately larger recoveries.

Does this include fees or taxes?

No. It is a pure percentage change between two values. Trading fees, spreads, network fees and any tax owed will reduce your real result.
