The life of a Bitcoin transaction, in five stages
- 1. Create — your wallet builds and signs a transaction, choosing a fee rate
- 2. Broadcast — it is handed to peers, which takes seconds and reserves nothing
- 3. Mempool — it waits in node memory, competing on fee rate for block space
- 4. Block inclusion — a miner includes it, and only now is the fee actually paid
- 5. Confirmations — each later block adds depth; how much the recipient needs is their policy
