    What this calculator does

    It converts a contribution schedule into three things: the total you would contribute, the portion lost to fees, and how many units that buys at the average price you supply. It is a planning aid for budgeting, not a performance simulator.

    The formula

    Total contributed = amount per purchase × number of purchases. Fees = total contributed × fee %. Amount converted = total contributed − fees. Units = amount converted ÷ average price entered.

    Worked example

    Contributing $100 monthly for 24 months totals $2,400. A 1% fee takes $24, leaving $2,376 converted. At an average price of $30,000 that is 0.0792 units. The numbers are illustrative and the price is one you chose, not one we obtained.

    Why there is no historical mode

    A historical DCA simulator needs a licensed source of past prices. We have not licensed one for this purpose, and we would rather leave the feature out than publish figures we cannot stand behind. If that changes, we will say so on our data methodology page.

    Limitations

    • A single average price cannot capture how volatile real purchases are.
    • Fees, spreads and network costs vary between platforms and over time.
    • No tax treatment is applied.
    • Nothing here suggests that any schedule will produce a gain.

    • Assuming the average price you enter is a forecast rather than an assumption.
    • Ignoring fees, which compound across many small purchases.
    • Planning contributions larger than you can sustain for the full schedule.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Does this show what a past DCA plan would have returned?

    No. It uses only the numbers you enter. Simulating a historical plan requires licensed historical price data we have not integrated, so we do not offer it rather than publishing figures we cannot verify.

    Why does the calculator ask for an average purchase price?

    Because it does not fetch prices. You supply the average price you expect or have actually paid, and the tool converts your contribution plan into totals from that input.

    Does dollar-cost averaging guarantee a better outcome?

    No. It removes the need to time entries and spreads purchases across different prices, which can help or hurt depending on how prices move afterwards. It is a contribution method, not a return strategy.
