What the bands mean
- 0–24 Extreme fear — investors are anxious; historically associated with heavy selling, though that does not make it a buy signal.
- 25–44 Fear — caution dominates and volatility is often elevated.
- 45–54 Neutral — no strong directional sentiment.
- 55–74 Greed — optimism and rising momentum.
- 75–100 Extreme greed — euphoric conditions; often accompanied by unusually high volume and social activity.
How it is calculated
Alternative.me combines volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance and Google Trends data into one weighted score. The methodology is the provider's, not ours — we normalise and display their published figures without altering them.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Crypto Fear & Greed Index?
It is a daily 0–100 score published by Alternative.me that summarises several market signals — volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, Bitcoin dominance and search trends — into one number. Low values indicate fear, high values indicate greed.
How often does the index update?
Alternative.me publishes one reading per day. We fetch it on our server and cache it for up to an hour, so the value you see is that day's published reading, not a live tick.
Is the index a buy or sell signal?
No. It is a sentiment summary, not a forecast, and it says nothing about any specific asset or time horizon. Nothing on this page is financial advice.
Why does the index sometimes disagree with price?
Several of its inputs measure attention and volatility rather than price itself. Sentiment can stay fearful during an early recovery, or greedy while price moves sideways on high volume.
