What Optimism is
Optimism (often referred to as the OP Mainnet chain) is an optimistic rollup built on Ethereum, developed originally by the team now organized as the OP Labs and the Optimism Foundation. Like other optimistic rollups, it executes transactions off Ethereum's base layer and periodically submits transaction data back to Ethereum, relying on Ethereum for security and data availability while offering users much lower fees than transacting on Ethereum directly.
What distinguishes Optimism strategically is that its underlying software, the OP Stack, is published as a public good that other teams can fork and run as their own chain. Coinbase's Base is the best-known chain built on the OP Stack, and a number of other networks — including chains from teams such as Worldcoin (World Chain) and Zora — have also adopted it. Collectively, OP Stack chains that opt into shared standards and revenue arrangements are referred to as the Superchain, a term Optimism uses to describe this federation of separately operated but technically related rollups.
How the network works
Optimism's execution model resembles other optimistic rollups: transactions are provisionally accepted, batched, and posted to Ethereum, with a dispute period intended to allow invalid state transitions to be challenged. For much of its early operating history, Optimism relied on a simplified, more centralized fault-proof mechanism rather than a fully permissionless, adversarial fault-proof system; a core piece of its multi-year technical roadmap has been building out a complete permissionless fault-proof system, allowing any party (not just a whitelisted set) to challenge invalid transaction batches, which the project has treated as a prerequisite for describing the network as more fully trust-minimized.
OP, Optimism's token, is used exclusively for protocol governance and does not function as the network's gas token; users pay transaction fees in ETH, the same asset used on Ethereum mainnet. Governance itself is split into two bodies under a structure Optimism calls bicameral: the Token House, made up of OP token holders who vote on protocol upgrades, treasury allocations, and incentive programs, and the Citizens' House, a separate body intended to represent public-goods interests using non-transferable 'citizen' badges rather than OP token weight, which votes specifically on distributing retroactive public goods funding.
Retroactive public goods funding (often shortened to RetroPGF) is a recurring program in which Optimism allocates funds after the fact to projects, tools, and infrastructure the community judges to have already provided value to the Optimism ecosystem, rather than funding proposals prospectively before impact is demonstrated. Separately, chains that join the Superchain and adopt OP Stack standards participate in a revenue-sharing arrangement in which a share of the sequencer profits generated by those chains is contributed back to a collective fund controlled by Optimism's governance, intended to fund shared public goods and further OP Stack development.

What Optimism is actually used for
OP Mainnet itself hosts a broad range of decentralized applications typical of Ethereum's ecosystem — decentralized exchanges, lending markets, and NFT platforms among them — offered at lower transaction costs than Ethereum's base layer. But arguably Optimism's more consequential role has become infrastructural: by giving away the OP Stack as open-source software and building the Superchain concept and its revenue-sharing model around it, Optimism has positioned itself less as a single competing chain and more as the standard-setter for a family of chains, several of which (Base in particular) now process substantially more activity than OP Mainnet itself.
The Citizens' House and RetroPGF process have also functioned as a live, ongoing experiment in funding open-source and public-goods infrastructure directly through a blockchain's own governance and treasury, distinct from typical venture funding or grants programs, and have been studied and referenced by other ecosystems considering similar mechanisms.
Risks and limitations
Sequencer centralization is a real, acknowledged limitation shared across the Superchain: OP Stack chains, including OP Mainnet itself, generally run a single sequencer operator responsible for ordering transactions, which introduces a point of potential censorship, downtime, or transaction-ordering unfairness (commonly discussed under the term MEV) that a fully decentralized sequencer set would reduce. Optimism's roadmap includes decentralizing sequencing, but it has not been the default operating mode historically.
Optimism's June 2022 airdrop, which distributed OP tokens to a large set of prior users, was also marred by an operational failure when a wallet address belonging to the market maker Wintermute was mistakenly sent a very large batch of tokens intended for internal use rather than for the eligible airdrop recipients, due to human error in the distribution process; Wintermute and Optimism subsequently arranged for the tokens to be returned, but the incident highlighted the operational risk inherent in large, manually coordinated token distributions. More broadly, because governance is split between two houses with different logics (token-weighted voting versus non-transferable citizen badges), the system is structurally more complex than single-body DAO governance, and its long-run effectiveness at balancing token holder interests against public-goods funding remains an ongoing, evolving experiment rather than a settled design.
Historical context
Optimism's mainnet launched in stages beginning in 2021, arriving as one of the first Ethereum optimistic rollups alongside Arbitrum. Its early fee-multiplier fault-proof mechanism and later full fault-proof development reflected a broader industry-wide pattern of rollups initially launching with more centralized security assumptions and progressively working toward fuller trust-minimization, a process referred to across the industry using informal 'training wheels' terminology.
The OP token launched in May 2022, with the June 2022 airdrop to prior network users notable both for its scale and for the Wintermute mis-send incident that briefly threatened a significant share of the newly distributed supply. From 2023 onward, Optimism's identity shifted substantially toward the OP Stack and Superchain concept, accelerated in particular by Coinbase's decision to build Base on the OP Stack in 2023, which brought a large, mainstream-facing user base into the broader Optimism-aligned ecosystem and reinforced Optimism's positioning as an infrastructure provider for other chains rather than solely a standalone rollup competing directly with them.
